I finally made my 2025 bag.
The Scrap Bag.
The thesis of the bag was: I need a bag that can carry my daily things, (compact, library book, pen, pack of gum), and also allow me to pick up things along my way.
The classic armpit bag pattern I’ve made can carry the basics just fine. But what if I stumble upon a street fair? What if I have to go to Mood Fabric and I refuse to carry one of their bags around? I need a bag that can carry a yard of salmon stretch jersey and some new jewelry I found in the street with my everyday basics.
Made with a dark denim base and red vinyl lining, this was the natural progression from the scrap jacket I made this spring. A way of making a texture reminiscent of fur or feathers with recycled textiles. I keep such small parts of every textile I use and I’m always happy when I can utilize these pieces.
I wrote more about the emotional connections I’ve been having in this month’s essay newsletter so here I just want to say it’s glam and gorge and one of my new ways of working. This was an experiment on making this texture more mechanically because I sewed all of the scraps on my coat by HAND!!! I always have to do something the absolute hardest and most grueling way in order to understand it and then I can make it easier on myself.
I’m building a small collection of items I want to sell, either IRL or online on my website and by fine tuning this process I think I can include this process in this collection.
Happy Gemini Season!!!!!
Every year I learn that a new person that I enjoy is a Gemini. Last year was Kylie Minogue which has come full circle and I attended her show at Madison Square Garden in March.
This year I’m pleased to announce I found out Tim Robinson is a Gemini. I watched his new movie Friendship twice in theaters so far and hope to go again. Suddenly my love for his absurdist chaos makes so much sense because we just have that Gemini #connection. Seeing him shuffling around in this ugly ass coat also reminds me he’s a midwestern gemini to the core like… *pinkpantheress voice* YEAH!!!!!!!!!!
Another yearly tradition is making a Gemini Season Garment. Something explicitly made to show my Gemini pride. It becomes a fun challenge to see how many times I can wear it within that month, an anchor for as many fun outfits I can put together with a through line throughout.
They usually reflect whatever objects or way of working that I’ve been obsessing over at the moment. I remember the ruffled shorts with ‘'‘Gemini” rhinestoned on the butt of 2020… The extra long pink velour opera length gloves with charms spelling “Gemini” on the fingers in 2019. Naturally this years is patchworked and formed into the button down pattern I’ve perfected these past months. She’s already lived so many lives and she is still being worn to this day.
OACHAVEZ JUNE TREND REPORT *PRIDE EDITION*
Super Freaky Grandpas are IN!!
The etymology is as such:
August 12, 2022 - Nicki Minaj releases her song “Super Freaky Girl”
October 14, 2022 - In an inevitable twitter beef, BIG Latto slams Nicki Minaj by referring to her as “Super Freaky Grandma”.
2023 - This term grew in popularity with me and my friends, often switching the word Grandma for something silly that is super freaky in that moment. Often worn as a title more than used as a descriptor.
2025- a trend begins to arise, men in their 50’s and 60’s bearing all in the press. What does it all mean?
It’s no surprise that this comes the year I make my clothing tagline “Queer Elder”. Are our elders showing us that sex appeal is a state of mind and can be served at any age? There’s some connection to our current economic state…I haven’t found the through lines yet but I know they’re there.
Walking in the middle or the street is IN!!!
There’s something so freeing about walking slowly down the middle of the street. A little danger, a little defiance… Sometimes you need to remember your free will and say, I can walk in the middle of the streets if I want. My friends hate whenever I’m in a neighborhood like Red Hook or just anywhere at night because my body roams freely, nothing is a sidewalk or street, it’s all walkable
Getting a Summer Cut like a dog is so IN!!!!!
I cut off all of my hair and I feel so alive. Every year around this time I cut my hair off because a full head of hair in the heat is criminal for me… Winter is for growing it out and playing with hairstyles and summer is for swimming and running around in the heat, I don’t have time to sweat out my roller set.
Asking “Should We Get A Roadie?” is IN!!!
In today’s economy, I’m finding the drinking happening on a night out is happening in the in betweens. I’ll get an overpriced drink at the party, sure but sometimes its a 25 minute bus ride between spots and you gotta ask your friend like…. Should We Get A Roadie?
This is becoming most fun when used in absurdity. You’re walking the 2 blocks to your friends house and they ask, “Should we get a roadie?”
You’re on your way to help a friend move and you stop to ask, “Should we get a roadie?”
This is a dangerous game because as a Gemini with lots of Saggitarius’s in my life the answer is often “Yeah *lip biting emoji*” and suddenly its a problem.
Mesh shoes are OUT!!!!!
I gave you girls a summer…. Where are earth polluting microtrends when you need them??? GET your toes out of that butterfly sanctuary on your feet and wear sandals like a real ass bitch or cover them up…….FAWK!!!!
